AR, LA, and the GPS
We are learning as we go just what the GPS considers a road. We no longer choose the Shortest Route option for travel in the motor home unless I check the suggested route to see if the roads are actually on the map. But we took the truck out for groceries and some sales work on Friday and there was a 42 mile difference between Shortest and Fastest options. Trying to conserve gas we chose the short route. It started out pretty good....
a nice gravel road, a little on the roller coaster side but not bumpy. Several deer and a rabbit crossed in front of us and occasionally the bright flash of a cardinal caught our eye. Not bad!
However, we became a bit concerned when the road began to look like this, hoping we weren't trespassing on private property. But we decided to see what was beyond that house; maybe the road continued. The map view on the GPS showed it going on...... Wrong!
This is what we found. Apparently there is a road there but the owner chose not to mow it. We turned around, thinking we made a wrong turn somewhere but the GPS kept wanting to direct us right back, whichever road we chose. We had no idea where we were because these roads are not on the map we have. So I'm thinking, "Oh, this is just great! We're going to stumble into someone's still (yes, they do exist) back in these woods and get ourselves in trouble." I finally got us headed in the general direction of 'home' (the GPS shows the direction you're going, thank goodness) and ignored the GPS until it rerouted. I've since learned that I could have 'excluded' that road it kept wanting to return us to and it would have rerouted us sooner. But hey, we did save some gas and saw some very rural Louisiana and Arkansas living!

The adventures of the modern marvel. GPS has given you some interesting adventures, hasn't it?
It's beautifully green there. I don't know why that surprises me.
It probably surprises you because I talk so much about the heat and in Oregon the heat isn't connected with so much humidity. Hot and wet equals green!
Always take the fastest route. :-)
