Just up a small rise from the RV area was this beauty.
I had to investigate!
By peeking in a window I learned it is called Paxton House, which led to information online from the
It is currently being restored, as funds allow.
Elisha Paxton and his wife Margaret had one daughter and six sons. One son, Elisha F. Paxton, was an acquaintance of Stonewall Jackson, who lived in Lexington, VA, six miles away.
I found some fun reading on Wikipedia about them.
A visit to the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington was in order.
We visited here on an earlier trip, but it's like a magnet to me.
A memorial to Thomas Jonathan Jackson
with The Four Apostles
Can you tell I am an admirer of Stonewall Jackson?
I hope to visit with him someday : )
For some insight into how he thought, read a few quotes and favorite sayings.
The Chapel, outside....
and inside.
The unpretentious administrative buildings
A few of the summertime cadets
The dress shoes and socks with the casual wear brought a smile. Shortly after this photo was taken, they were ambling through a narrow street area, causing a car to have to wait. A very tall, athletically fit man was jogging on the road and came up behind them. We heard a loud, authoritative command, "Get out of the street!"
Talk about a scramble to the side of the street!!! He stopped to give the cadets some further advice, in a quieter tone, before continuing his jogging.
They stayed at the side of the street.
Adjoining the campus of VMI ...
...is the scenic campus of Washington and Lee University.
The two photos were taken from the same spot in the sidewalk, just did a 180 turn.
Lee Chapel,
where Robert E. and some family members are buried in the lower level, just across a hallway from a reproduction of his office when he was head of the school for five years, after the Civil War.
There is a small museum and book store there also, where I had a nice conversation with a young lady, and on whose recommendation I purchased a book titled The Lee Girls. Looking forward to reading it.
Antebellum campus buildings, from the front of Lee Chapel
Did a double take when I saw this parked near our truck in the VMI parking lot!
The door sign says Willamette Valley Concrete Pumping Inc. and that's an Oregon phone number.
It was towing this old Jaguar.
Buena Vista is nestled at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains
so we took an early morning drive up to the Blue Ridge Parkway
and we were not disappointed!
Thank You, my creator Father,
for the beauty You provide and allow me to enjoy.
And thank You for this hard working man.
My guy after a long, hot day at the mill.
Dad's home!
She feels it necessary to clean his face of sweat and grinding grit.
It's a daily ritual when he works.
Good job, Paulee!
