We were very happy to be away from the craziness of the DC area and quite content to find a "home" near the little town of Elizabethtown, in southeastern NC, a somewhat outdated resort area called White Lake. Just our style.
George got busy dismantling the glider and chairs so they could be stored elsewhere. Well, the glider had to remain in the back of the truck, but fit better after removing the glider parts, and the chairs are now in one of the bays : )
This door on the house across the drive from us caught my eye.....
I mentioned it to George. His reply: "Don't even ask. We don't have any room left."
I suggested perhaps we could put it on the roof of the motor home...
I got "The Look". End of discussion. OK, I'll be content with my glider.
So, having gotten settled in and having a little time before work started, we drove out to see what we could see.
We didn't go far from the lake and came upon this. Found out later that Fort Bragg isn't far away and either the Rangers or Special Ops had come to do some training.
We found a place to park and were quite entertained as we watched them prepare, load into the chopper, and parachute out over the lake.
Not sure what happened with this jumper, but instead of going over the lake he directed his chute back over the take off area and was desperately trying to get his swimming "flippers" off before he landed. He was successful... one landed in the road, one by the side of the road and he managed to get to earth ok.
After landing in the lake, the paratroopers were quickly picked up by others in these inflatable boats.
We were only 60 miles from Wilmington and the ocean, so another day we drove over and enjoyed the somewhat cool weather and uncrowded beaches.
Watching the lifeguards get ready for the day.
Poor Paulee REALLY wanted to run on the beach!
No dogs allowed.
We drove farther down the road and found a beach where dogs were allowed,
on a leash. She was a happy pup!
Wilmington beach sand does not look like Lincoln City beach sand.
Larger grains and lighter colors. And I especially enjoyed the little shells.
Beach beauties of the floral sort.
The North Carolina
We would have liked to take the tour but it had gotten too hot to leave Paulee in the truck, even with the windows down, so we made our way back to Elizabethtown.
A short walk down the drive brought us to the lake and the piers, a cool place to sit and enjoy the beauty in the evenings.
The view walking back to land.
One evening there was a family on this pier and they were singing
"Do Lord, Oh Do Lord, Oh Do Remember Me".
Sounded so pretty over the water.
And every time we walked to the pier I stopped to admire
the Spanish moss in the cypress tree.
