Headed West!

Well, first we had to go north, up the middle of Arkansas,

through the Ozarks,

a stop in Independence, MO, and a chance to visit with Jean, Paul, Melissa and Mallory, during which time the only picture I got was of Jeans's apartment :( Too busy talking.

and up the west side of Iowa.

In South Dakota we really turned west and spent the night at a rest area.
The day included a stop to find and fix a fuel leak after we started smelling diesel, a messy, smelly endeavor. We got an early start on Sunday (3:30 am) and were rudely interrupted by a flashing red light on the dash and the sickly sweet smell of antifreeze at 5:30, right after passing a rest stop exit. But we were able to get off on the shoulder enough to not be a road hazard and after another messy, smelly hour and a half George got the water hose replaced and we were on the road again.

We made a stop in Sturgis, SD, to take in the sights of the final day of the big motorcycle rally. I've never seen so many bikes in one place and most of the people had already left. We enjoyed looking at and listening to the motorcycles, however the general atmosphere wasn't all that great for the most part.
If you click on this photo to enlarge it you can see a pretty awesome paint job.

I liked this one, too.

Enlarge and notice the logo on the back of this man's shirt.

My favorite photo. Don't you love it?

And then to Spearfish, 20 miles from Sturgis, where the reality of the bike rally's impact on the surrounding area's economy hit us when the RV park owner said the cost to stay the night at this less than impressive campground was $60! I would guess that the rest of the year it would be between $20 and $30. But it was close to the mill and had a nice laundry room where I was able to get 6 loads done in good time.

I'm still trying to forgive you for being this close and not stopping in for a week or two, but I know you had to get going.

Looks like you're having fun on the way home, though!

Love you both.

A week or two in St. Paul would have been wonderful! However, the guy in Montana was set on the 15th to start the job because they were shutting the mill down for other maintenance. And we left Arkansas two days later than originally planned and we try to allow for problems in our travel time.

Thank you so much for commenting on my blog. I, too, have been sneaking peeks at yours and enjoying myself with "pretend" travel. Oh, the great places you go. I am so glad that both you and George can do this together. What a great time in life. I do understand, tho, the part your sacrificing in not seeing the grandkids (and your children) as often as you would like. I'm so glad we can trust the Lord to know what is the best for us. I do love your family's blogs. Actually, I love your family. You're a blessed woman!

I'll be thinking of you during the "heat"!!!! Blessings, Sheri

How fun to see you on our way back west. Dom loved the motorcycles. HE said, "I want to BUY one of those mama....but not ride on it."

;)

And I did love that photo of the two guys shootin' the breeze.

Yeah...the one of the guys is my favorite too! That's great. DOn't you wish you could take more people pictures? I have ONE great shot of people in Ethiopia. It is my favorite memento from the trip.

I love seeing the countryside. I could definitely see myself as a motor home traveler when we get old...of course, older than you unless we can find a job to travel to.

The interesting thing about Sturgis was that I felt no reservations about taking 'people shots'. It was as if they wanted you to take pictures. I wish I had the freedom elsewhere.

Time again to start blogging!
